Women’s Equality Day celebrates the ratification, on August 26, 1920, of the 19th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. The 19th Amendment, the Woman Suffrage Amendment, granted women the right to vote on the same basis as men. The national celebratory day was first established in 1971.
For the past 30 years in Muncie, a celebration of Women’s Equality Day has been hosted by the Coalition of Women’s Organizations: AAUW, LWV, Friends of the Conley, The Coalition of 100 Women, NOW, and Indiana Women of Achievement. In the past few years, the group has recognized annually six women who make significant contributions to the community, by presenting them with the Vivian V. Conley Award. Vivian Conley was a community leader who, while completing her degree at Ball State as a senior citizen, left her mark at Ball State, and opened the education door for many young people and non-traditional students.
The Awards Ceremony will be held at 5 p.m., on Monday, August 28,
in the Auditorium of City Hall.
The six women who will be honored this year are:
Dr. Dea Bell, Education
Peggy Lewis, Advocacy for Social Justice
Jennifer Mearns, Community Outreach
Julie Vance, Business
Dariane Quarles, Youth Leadership
Aimee Robinson West, Community Engagement
We hope you can join us for this celebration of women and the impact they have on our community.
