Frederick Douglass Jazz Works was created in honor of Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), an enslaved African in America who escaped to freedom and became a leading orator, political activist, abolitionist, writer, banker, ambassador, theologian, and statesman. Ruth Naomi Floyd sets Douglass’ words from speeches and essays to original jazz compositions. This free concert will be the Institute for the Study of Political Economy’s offering for the Madam CJ Walker Colloquium. This annual event explores the relevance of entrepreneurship and free enterprise for the past, present, and future of historically marginalized groups. It honors African American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and political and social activist Madam Walker (1867–1919). Madam Walker established her company’s national headquarters in Indianapolis in 1910.
